What on Earth is Organopathy?

Organopathy, what is it?

Organopathy is the homeopathic treatment of organ diseases with organ remedies. Organ disease is simply a diseased or disordered organ of the body. There may be a diagnosis, like hepatitis, heart disease, copd, etc. Organ remedies are homeopathic remedies with an affinity for a specific organ. Some examples are Carduus marianus for the liver, Berberis for the kidneys, Crataegus for the heart. These organ remedies are also known as organ support remedies or drainage remedies.

Organopathy is thought to originate with Paracelcus (1493-1541), continued by Rademacher (1772-1850), revived by James Compton Burnett (1840-1901), and used and expanded on by homeopaths today.

Remedies prescribed in this manner must have a strong affinity for the diseased or struggling organ and must be known to treat the pathologic state of the organ and/or the symptoms of the diseased organ. This is known as a “Simile” or “Pathological Similimum” prescription instead of a “Similimum” prescription. Similimum prescription being one that covers the whole state of the person in their totality.

Organ remedies are generally, though not always, prescribed in Mother Tinctures, low X potencies, or low C potencies.

Some examples of organ remedies that can be utilized and their organs of affinity are :

  • Liver:
  • Carduus mariannus, Chelidonium, Hydrastis
  • Kidneys:
  • Berberis, Taraxacum, Solidago
  • Nervous System:
  • Avena sativa, Hypericum, Kali phos
  • Lungs:
  • Lobelia
  • Blood:
  • Echinacea, Pyrogen, Ferrum
  • Gut:
  • Nat phos, Alfalfa, Hydrastis

This is by no means an exhaustive list, in reality it is a small sample.

You may wonder, why would we use organ remedies in homeopathy?

  • To support diseased or struggling organs, as we have already discussed.
  • To support detox organs that may be under functioning, or under stress, and to allow for effective elimination of toxins.
  • Sometimes times the actual homeopathic prescription that is needed at the time of the appointment may not cover these organs that need support. This is when it may be beneficial to incorporate an organopathic prescription along side your homeopathic prescription. Often times this is seen in complex disease states. Some examples of this would be Autism, Parkinson’s, effects of drugging or poisonings, and others.

Organopathy can be a useful tool for todays complex health issues.
