I am sharing some tips on homeopathy for sports injuries today. One of the places homeopathy shines is in dealing with typical first aid type situations.
Moms listen up! Since I am a mom of boys, let me tell you these remedies are invaluable to have on hand throughout the childhood and teen years. Even if they are not involved in organized sports, with kids being kids, and especially boys being boys, you will want to have them available.
Athletes of all kinds listen up! The remedies you will need will be the same whether you are the weekend warrior or the professional athlete competing on the world stage. Get yourself a homeopathy kit and carry it with you. Does your significant other, family member, or trainer travel with you? Have them carry the kit. Print this page out, fold it up, put it in the kit, and carry it with. You will need it. If you want to cut your recovery time, and get yourself back in the game – quick, you will need to be knowledgeable in homeopathy for sports injuries.
A small homeopathy first aid kit can get you a long way, as you will see below. Many of the remedies have multiple situations in which they can be utilized.
Sprains and Strains
Arnica. The wonder remedy. Your go-to for almost all injuries: sore muscles, sprains, bruising, blunt trauma, crashes. Helps to reduce swelling, repair damaged blood vessels, and reduce pain caused by these issues. Start with Arnica immediately after the injury.
Rhus tox. Great for stiffness and pain. Rhus will be worse from rest, and stiff when they first start moving, but will be better once they get going and be better for continued movement.
Bryonia. Worse from any movement. They will want to lie still and will usually be very grumpy. The injured part will be better from pressure, possibly even lying on the injured part will make them feel better.
Ruta. Affinity for tendons and injuries of. There will be a bruised sore feeling and a feeling of lameness in the affected part. Follows both Arnica and Rhus tox well, after the initial swelling has gone.
Crashes, Accidents and Falls
Arnica. Always start with Arnica. Give it right away. Arnica helps with soreness, bruising, swelling, shock, the effects of physical trauma of all kinds. Amazing for head injuries and preventing serious damage if taken early.
Ruta. With Ruta think goose egg type injuries of the boney areas, especially if there is a feeling of lameness in the injured part. There is also the feeling of bruised sore pain with Ruta similar to Arnica. The patient may be restless, either physically or mentally, depending on how badly they are injured.
Bellis. Bellis is also a remedy useful in bruising and trauma from accidents and falls. This remedy also has the feeling of bruise, sore pain, similar to Arnica and Ruta. Bellis is useful for bruising and trauma to the softer tissues of the body like the abdomen and breasts. Also think of Bellis if there is bruising to soft tissue that has cleared with Arnica, but a lump still remains.
Calendula. Use the topical herbal preparations and/or the homeopathic remedy in 6c. Excellent wound healer. It helps to prevent wound infection, reduces scarring, and speeds healing. *Be sure to thoroughly clean the wound prior to administering.*
Fractures
Arnica. Always start with Arnica. (Are you recognizing a theme yet? Lol.) It will help with trauma on the body and mind, and help deal with the swelling and bruising.
Bryonia. This remedy is great for pain, especially for pain from broken ribs. If the pain is worse from the slightest movement and the patient wants to sit completely still, give Bryonia.
Hypericum. For any nerve pain associated with fractures. If there is shooting nerve pain from the break this remedy will be helpful. Also useful in the recovery of fractures to the spine.
Symphytum. This is the main remedy for healing of the broken bone itself. This remedy can significantly speed healing time in fractures. Very important note on this remedy is not to give it until the fracture has been set, that is “if” the fracture can be set, not all can be.
Calc phos 6x. Great remedy to use in fractures that are slow to heal.
Black Eye
Arnica. Again, always start with Arnica. It can help get swelling under control, and prevent or resolve bruising.
Symphytum. This remedy is the best to use if there was injury to the eyeball itself, not so much the surrounding area. It can be alternated with Arnica.
Ledum. Almost a specific remedy for the traditional black eye. Once bruising around the eye has set in. The area will feel better from cold applications (icing).
Cramping
Mag phos 6x. The miracle worker for cramps. It starts working within a few minutes of taking. It is best taken in hot water and sipped, but if you do not have access to hot water, do not let that stop you from taking it. Have it on hand during an endurance type event, especially during hot weather.
There are other homeopathic remedies for cramping, but with the focus being on self treatment of sports injuries I am limiting the selection to the remedy above.
Heat Stroke
Belladonna. Usually my 1st choice in heat stroke. The face will be bright red, they will be hot to the touch, and they will complain of a throbbing headache. They will be worse from light, noise, and jarring. Dilated pupils will usually be seen as well.
Glonione. The face will be red and they may have a violent throbbing headache. Pair those symptoms with mental confusion, dizziness, or an unresponsiveness, and Glonione will be the remedy to give.
Aconite. The person that needs Aconite will be anxious and fearful, many times they will have the fear that they are going to die, and may even say “I am going to die”. The skin can be hot and dry to the touch and they will usually be very thirsty.
Nat mur 6x. This remedy is essential in heatstroke or sunstroke. It can be alternated with other remedies. It helps to regulate the distribution of water in the tissues of the body and the brain.
